Alonzo Mourning II was born in Chesapeake, Virginia on
February 8, 1970 to Alonzo Sr. and Julia Mourning.
When he was 12 years old his parents were divorced, and they were
unable to come to an agreement as to who should take care of him. Ultimately,
they chose to put Alonzo in a foster home that was managed by a woman named
Fanny Threet. Including her children, there were a total of 49 kids in the
home.
Alonzo described himself as "clumsy" and "awkward" in
high school, and did not decide to play basketball until he was in junior
high. At the age of 16, he was invited to play in the Five Stars Basketball
Camp, which was the foundation for some of the best basketball talent in all
of high school.
Alonzo quickly made a name for himself, because the very next year, he won
the State Championship with Indian River high School. Alonzo dominated with
21.8 points, 11.0 rebounds and 9.6 blocked shots per game – exceptional
numbers in any league, especially in high school. After he finished high
school, he traveled with Virginia's AAU team to some national tournaments.
Mourning made his presence known in one game by blocking an amazing 27 shots.
Alonzo soon was ranked the top High School prospect in the U.S.
Alonzo had many recruiting offers, but narrowed them down to Maryland,
Virginia, Syracuse, Georgetown and Georgia Tech. Alonzo met with Georgetown
Head Coach John Thompson, and it was there they he stayed. It was the same
school that his idol, Patrick Ewing, attended.
