Mourning led the Georgetown Hoyas to win the Big East, but they lost
to Duke in the regional finals. Mourning was faced against Christian
Laettner, and Zo scored 24 points and 9 rebounds. Alonzo’s time on the floor was split with none other than Dikembe
Mutombo, a little-known center from Nigeria. That year, Dikembe and Alonzo
were named Co-Big East Defensive Players of the Year. Mourning also faced significant problems in his own personal life
when he was forced to testify against the notorious Ray Edmond, a drug dealer
in Washington. Edmond had been seen socializing with some Georgetown
students, including Alonzo. Although Mourning was not involved or implied in
any criminal activity, he still received the wrath of some Georgetown
superiors. Mourning learned his lesson and learned quickly to avoid trouble. With two potential superstar centers, coach John Thompson had to make
a decision to allow both more significant playing time. Mutombo, who was
several inches tall, received the center postion, while Zo was chosen to be
the power forward. Making the position change was not easy for Zo at first. As time when
on, he became more comfortable at power forward, but then he strained the
arch of his left foot. When he returned from his injury, he was not the same
and finished with his most disappointing season in his young career. Mourning had finished his junior year and needed one last year to
finish his degree in sociology. He was very interested in entering the 1991
NBA draft with his good friend Mutombo, but in the end decided to finish
college, get his degree and get in another year of basketball development. |
